Typosquatting: The Danger Of Typos In Your Internet Address Bar ...

Typosquatting: The Danger Of Typos In Your Internet Address BarIf you are as typographically challenged as I am, or if you fingers are just too darn big and meaty to type properly on a smartphone or mobile device (as mine are), there?s a good chance that you?ve already come into contact with the unsavoury online practice known as typosquatting.

The premise of typosquatting is simple ??an opportunistic or malicious individual or web service sets up a website that is similar in typographic appearance to another popular website. This fake site then benefits from visits accrued by way of spelling errors, typos or misconceptions made when attempting to enter the legitimate website?s address into the web browser.

Typosquatters have a number of techniques in their toolkit to fool unwary cyber travellers, and the consequences can be far reaching. If the victim is fortunate, they?ll just waste a few minutes clicking through a series of harmless advertisements before they realise their mistake. Less fortunate souls however, can potentially put themselves at far greater risk by entering personal details into a phishing website or infecting their computer with malware.

How to spot typosquatting

When we go online, whether it is for leisure, business or otherwise, we expect to be connected to the product, service or information that we?re looking for. Typosquatting preys on this expectation and will typically target websites from:

  • Large companies with globally recognised brand names, such as Microsoft, Apple and Coca-Cola.
  • Large companies with names that are harder to spell or are derived from foreign words, such as Lufthansa or Lego.

Typosquatters have a number of different techniques for targeting these sorts of websites, so to minimise your risk of falling prey to typosquatting, we?ve put together a dossier of common typosquatter variants that we think you should acquaint yourself with:

Variant #1: The Dodgy English Tutor

The most common variant of typosquatter, the Dodgy English Tutor, spends all their time surfing grammar websites, using anagram builders to cheat at online scrabble and, of course, typosquatting.

For example:

  • Typosquatter URL = http://www.theindependent.com/
  • Legitimate URL = http://www.theindependant.com/

If you know you have a problem with a particular word or set of words (I can never spell ?privilege? without a dictionary?), always search for the website you?re looking for in your favourite search engine instead of typing it into the address bar. Your friendly search engine will usually gently enquire as to whether you really meant to misspell the word and offer you a list of results based on the correct spelling.

Variant #2: Tiny Keypad Typosquatter (TKT)?

TKT has great big sausagy fingers and has never gotten around to upgrading whichever old, undersized smartphone they use to get around online. And, when they actually manage to get in front of a PC with a normal sized keyboard, they become over-excited and type too quickly. TKT takes advantage of typos, incorrect letter patterns and double keystrokes to fool their prey.

  • Typosquatter URLs = http://www.smasung.com/ or http://www.zamsung.com/
  • Legitimate URL = http://www.samsung.com/

Variant #3: Brand Police Typosquatter (BPT)

BPTs target websites which are built around ambiguous company names or weak branding that has yet to be properly burnt into the collective consumer consciousness. BPT will most often play on the existence or non-existence of a plural ?s? at the end of the brand (for example, despite the fact that I am employed by AVG, my mother still chooses to refer to ?Norton? as ?Nortons?).

  • Typosquatter URL = http://www.nortons.com/ (sorry, Mum!)
  • Legitimate URL = http://www.avg.com.au/ ? just kidding, it?s actually?http://www.norton.com/

Variant #4: DotCom Deviant

The DotCom Deviant is an expert on purchasing and squatting on different top-level domain combinations (ie. .com, .com.au, .co, .net, .org). The temptation to always use the ubiquitous ?.com? domain suffix is dangerous, as many companies and organisations are entitled to use ?.org? or ?.net?. Many companies will try to combat the DotCom Deviant by simply buying up all possible combinations themselves and redirecting visitors to the correct site, but you should always be aware that ?usopen.org? and ?usopen.com? (for example) are technically completely different web locations.

  • Typosquatter URL =?http://www.twitter.org/
  • Legitimate URL = http://www.twitter.com/

How to protect yourself against typosquatting

Typosquatting: The Danger Of Typos In Your Internet Address BarLevity aside, we realise that the average online traveller doesn?t go online with the specific purpose of spotting and avoiding different types of online fraud. Fortunately, there are some easy to follow rules of thumb that you should make part of your every day websurfing habits:

1. If in doubt, use a search engine.?No one business is completely immune to typosquatting. Bookmark your favourite search engine or have it as your home page and use it to search for any web address that you?re not absolutely sure of.

2. Take your time.?Think of the address bar as the slow-lane. You?ve potentially only got one chance to get it right and your trusty browser auto-correct feature won?t save you here!

3. Use bookmarks.?Most browsers support bookmarks with the CTRL+D keyboard combination. Bookmark any site you use regularly, such as online banking, webmail, or news services.

4. Report typosquatting sites to the company they are targeting.?Typosquatters deprive legitimate companies of revenue and often damage their online reputation. If you take a bit of extra time to report typosquatters to these companies (most will have a ?contact us? link on their home page), it is in their best interests to get the typosquatters shut down and prevent them from harming any of your fellow web travellers.

?

Have you fallen victim to typosquatting before? If so, what was the site you were trying to access? We?d love to hear about your typosquatting experiences in the comments section below or on our Facebook page!

Prudent pause for energy cause

Report an error

When life starts chaotically coming from every which way, it is often wise to take a deep breath, put the fast and furious on hold, and reassess the lay of the land.

The same goes with politics.

Industry Minister Christian Paradis' surprising decision late Friday to suddenly block the takeover of Canadian natural gas producer, Progress Energy Resources, by Malaysia's state-owned Petronas was one of those moments.

It was time to reassess, and sort out the chaos, and not run full tilt into a deal just to get it out of the way.

But let's not read into this that it is a harbinger of the Harper government suddenly deciding to get intransigently tough regarding foreign takeovers within Canada's oil and gas sectors.

It was merely a pause for the cause, and well timed.

Too much was happening at once.

Certain media, however, are already expressing "widespread worry" on behalf of pipeline interests that Paradis' rejection of Petronas' $5.9-billion deal signals a sudden protectionism, and that other mega-deal buyouts such as China's state-owned CNOOC's plans to take over Nexen, and Exxon Mobile's $3.1-billion desire for Celtic Exploration will be forever nixed.

It wasn't that long ago, however, that Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave a hint that he wanted a template built to manage foreign attempts to get its hands on our natural resources, especially when it comes to state-owned enterprises like CNOOC and Petronas.

As we opined here, in fact, the idea of letting China, as one example, get its mitts on Nexen without a little quid pro quo from the communists was not the kind of deal that should be endorsed.

And the Harper government appears to be listening.

There is likely no question that Paradis's excuse for not allowing the Progress deal -- that it fell short of Canada's "net benefit" requirements -- is a bit of a smoke screen to bide time, especially since he was particularly evasive in coughing up details as to the reasons why the deal was benefit-lacking.

But both Progress and Petronas have a 30-day window to appeal and, by then, the Harper government will hopefully have its template for foreign takeovers ready to unveil.

One that everyone will understand.

Habitat for Humanity rehabs home for Sycamore family

For Kelli Larsen, Sunday was a dream come true.

After a full year of spending every Saturday rebuilding a house on Roosevelt Court in Sycamore, Larsen was finally able to call a house a home after years of renting. It was a gift she always wanted to give her 14-year-old son Keagon and 21-year-old son Eathon, who has yet to see his new home because he is in South Korea with the military.

?It?s been an adventure,? Larsen said of building a home with volunteers from Habitat for Humanity. ?The hearts of many have really been in this house and it has a lot of memories already.?

Sunday marked the 11th home the DeKalb County Habitat for Humanity volunteers dedicated to a family in need ? a milestone volunteer coordinator Chris Atherton said she was happy to reach. Unlike most Habitat for Humanity homes, Atherton said volunteers rehabilitated an early 1900s home instead of building from the ground up.

The major overhaul, which included stripping the house down to the studs, presented more challenges than usual for the group. Atherton said difficulties, such as removing the whole basement floor, and surprises, such as books and bottles found in the walls, made the build one of the most unique experiences for the group.

?The thing with rehabbing is you never know what you are going to find,? Atherton said. ?It was a cool experience.?

Habitat for Humanity serves the community by building ? along with the chosen family ? simple and affordable homes with no interest loans to families who meet the qualifications. Those qualifications include living in DeKalb County for at least a year, meeting income requirements and living in unsafe or substandard housing.

And despite a downturn in the economy and increase in foreclosures, Atherton said the group is struggling to find families to build for. She said she was not sure if people were intimidated by the application process, but encouraged eligible residents to submit applications and seek out information at www.hfhdcillinois.org.

?We have a lot of options in DeKalb,? she said. ?And we have people inquire but then we don?t hear from them again.?

Larsen said after working for a full year with volunteers to achieve her dream of home ownership, she would recommend Habitat for Humanity to anyone who needed the assistance. Larsen addressed more than 20 of the volunteers and friends Sunday in her new home as she thanked everyone involved while holding back tears of happiness.

?What a sight it is,? she said of her new home. ?We finally have a place to call our own.?

Larsen?s new home would not be possible without the help of volunteers such as Curt Willard who came out every Saturday to organize volunteers in the mornings and work in the afternoons.

Willard said volunteering to build homes has become a passion as he has helped with seven houses in the county and even took a trip to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina to help rebuild. Although the construction labor comes after long work weeks, Willard said he would not trade in his experiences for anything.

?It?s such a warm feeling,? he said about watching families enter their home for the first time. ?It?s always very rewarding to see the final results.?

In addition to seeking families to build for, Habitat for Humanity also is seeking volunteers and people to serve on its board. Atherton said those interested can email hfhdcil@gmail.com or call 815-758-5055.

There are 13 hours, 57 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

Speculation and Criticism Swirl Around L.A. Museum Chief ...

October 22, 2012, 10:20 am

The New York Times examines the tenure of former Manhattan art dealer Jeffrey Deitch as director of Los Angeles? Museum of Contemporary Art and the divisions it has wrought in the institution?s board and the Southern California culture scene.

An unconventional but widely hailed choice when he was appointed in 2010, Mr. Deitch?for decades a major figure on the New York art scene?has drawn criticism over the ouster of the Los Angeles museum?s longtime top curator and for staging a series of celebrity- and pop-culture-oriented shows.

Attendance at the museum, widely known as MOCA, has more than doubled under Mr. Deitch?s direction, but detractors have painted him as a poor fundraiser and a tool of billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad, the institution?s chief benefactor.

?In New York I was always really appreciated for my contribution, but you would think that all I?ve done here is court Hollywood and do celebrity art,? Mr. Deitch, who has kept a low media profile amid the controversies, told the Times in a rare interview. ?I?ve never experienced this kind of distortion.?

91% Holy Motors

"Holy Motors," from French filmmaker Leos Carax, is the best avant-garde film of 2012 so far. But that's not saying much, as it's been a terrible year for avant-garde film. Despite its title, "Holy Motors" really isn't about cars. It's somewhat about technology, with limousines probably meant to represent traditional celluloid cameras -- so big and bulky that they are a challenge to handle. But oh so wonderful. Big wonderful machines. Stretch limos can barely turn a corner in the old sectors of great cities like Paris and New York. But doesn't everyone's heart skip a beat just a bit when they enter one? First and foremost, "Holy Motors" is about people, as was the case with Carax's first film, "Boy Meets Girl" (1984). This is an avant-garde artist with a deep-feeling heart and a deep sensitivity to the people around him. Holy Love. Amen to that. The film documents a day in the life of a man named Oscar. (Perhaps this is a tribute to American cinema and its big, grand Academy Awards. Holy Glamour.) Played spectacularly well by the protean Denis Lavant, Oscar is carted around all day in a white stretch limo, taken to a series of appointments throughout Paris. At each appointment, he becomes a different character. His limo is a dressing room, where he applies make-up and elaborate disguises to become his next character. The first one is an old, crippled woman begging for money on the street. Another is a revolting barefoot troll (half-man, half-beast) who interrupts a high-fashion photo shoot and kidnaps the model (who is played by Eva Mendes). Every sequence is quite thrilling, and each one is so different from the others. Most breathtaking of all is the sequence where his movements are recorded in a stop-motion studio, for use in what appears to be a pornographic video game. Gradually it becomes clear that these appointments are elaborately planned, and everyone he interacts with during each scene is also an actor. While donning his next costume in the limo, he is also reading a file that someone else has prepared, a summary of what his next character will be doing. We even meet a man who appears to be something like Oscar's employer, who critiques Oscar's performances. Oscar announces that he has been having more difficulty staying in character because the cameras have gotten so small that they cannot be seen. This is when "Holy Motors" started to seem like a comment on digital filmmaking. At my screening at the New York Film Festival, Carax was in attendance, as was Kylie Minogue, who has a small role in the film. (I initially thought this was Minogue's first time acting. But not so. She has appeared in a number of television shows and films, including "Moulin Rouge," where she played the Green Fairy. Who knew?) Carax spoke for about a half-hour after the screening, and it became even more clear that "Holy Motors" was primarily meant as an allegory about 21st-century filmmaking and the demise of traditional cameras. At one point, he said the new cameras today are not really cameras. "They're more like computers," he said. He feels sad about the rise of digital filmmaking, claiming that it "looks terrible." But "Holy Motors," which was shot 100% on digital, looked gorgeous. Gradually during his remarks, the object of his ire shifted. What really angers him is that he's been unable to make a film since 1999. He had several projects collapse at the last minute because producers won't back him. This has nothing to do with the 21st century or changing technology. This is the age-old problem of cinema being enormously expensive. If anything, it's gotten easier in the digital age because the new technology costs so much less. It's no surprise to me that Carax finally was able to get a project green-lighted now that digital has triumphed. To me, Carax has digital to thank. Furthermore, I suspect that "Holy Motors" is going to succeed well enough financially that he's going to get another project green-lighted in 2013. Holy Digital. While I appreciate Carax's work and consider myself a fan, I wouldn't put him in my pantheon. There's something still just a bit underwhelming about his work.

Beyond Their 10 Blue Links, Google?s And Bing?s Search Strategies Diverge

bing_blueNot too long ago, Google and Bing seemed fully focused on adding as many social features to their search engines as possible. For Google, that meant adding lots of Google+ features and for Bing it meant making the best out of its exclusive relationship with Facebook. Since then, though, it seems the two search engines' strategies have changed, with Google slowly deemphasizing social search and Bing going all in by adding more social features than ever.

Multiple Sclerosis MS Treatment eBook Cure By ... - Fitness For Health

Multiple Sclerosis MS Treatment eBook Cure By Dr. Gary M. LevinClick Image To Visit SiteYou are unable to enjoy your favorite things knowing the next attack is just a matter of time. Sometimes the attack?s "remission" leaves you with residual, usually permanent, and scary symptoms. You suffer month after month and find you are losing hope of ever getting better.

That?s a very sad place for anyone to be. I know. I?ve been treating patients with multiple sclerosis for 30 years.

It?s like your body is fighting an all-out war with a dangerous intruder that doesn?t exist. Your doctor may be putting on a brave face, but the truth is many physicians are just as frustrated as you are. They try every known cure, treatment and medically accepted idea ? yet NOTHING works!

In 1998, 13 years ago, I had a heart ailment which required surgical intervention. While recovering in cardiac rehabilitation, I had the unexpected opportunity to work with a colleague who practiced allopathic and alternative medicine. I was very impressed with what I saw.

Having been trained in the sciences, I decided to dive deep into this approach, serve a two-year preceptorship and test natural remedies and alternative treatments for diseases.

It was here that I discovered powerful breakthroughs that would have profound impacts for Multiple Sclerosis patients. Here was the highly effective KEY to slowing deterioration, preventing attacks, and promoting regeneration.

The healing process is carried out through a simple step-by-step method that rehabilitates your immune system and boosts your supporting body systems to rid it of all symptoms (and types) of Multiple Sclerosis PLUS re-energizes and purifies your body for maximum health.

To be honest, I would have been elated if my step-by-step Treatment System simply produced modest improvements in my patients. But the results were far better than anyone could ever expect?

Well, this may sound unusual, but if you think about it again you will come to the same conclusion as I did: "Multiple Sclerosis is just another symptom of the REAL disease you have"

So what is the real disease you suffer from? Well, the simple answer is that you have an overactive immune system disease. Your immune system "freaks out" when it meets your myelin sheaths and attacks them. The fact that you are diagnosed with MS is just because of the fact that your immune system "freaks out" in a way that creates the MS symptoms. But you?re NOT having a "MS" disease. You are having an overactive or blinded immune system disease!

The sad truth is that the strong toxic effect of all these drugs gradually poisons the whole body, which at the end of the day, only makes Multiple Sclerosis attacks and permanent damage worse!

The healing process is done by using a simple step-by-step method that rehabilitates your immune system and boosts supporting body systems to get rid of all symptoms (and types) of Multiple Sclerosis PLUS re-energizes and purifies your body for maximum health.

It shouldn?t be any surprise to people that directed nutrition and simple plants and vitamins can be the basis for powerful cures. Contrary to popular belief, even prescription drugs aren?t wholly manufactured from synthetics. Often a rare plant, available only in the rain forests of the Amazon, is the basis of powerful prescription medications. And don?t forget that your body is MADE FROM natural materials and incorporates a system that uses natural products such as food to constantly rebuild and heal. I followed this basic principle of pharmacology to find life-giving plants and herbs that could be the basis for reversing Multiple Sclerosis. This would not only give patients comfort and new hope, but give their bodies a way to build strength and coordination and promote a far stronger immune system.

The vast majority of people see a major improvement within just a few short weeks. It really doesn?t matter how long you have suffered with Multiple Sclerosis or what else you have tried, the results are almost always the same.

MY method treats ALL types including: "Benign" MS, clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), galloping MS, Schilder?s Disease and Neuromyelitis optica (Devic?s Syndrome).

Natural and alternative medicine works on the WHOLE body. It deals with "system healing" ? not specific disease healing, which is why you can never find one exact formula fit to heal each and every person.

Hard to believe? That?s right, I myself can?t comprehend it but numbers don?t lie. Today ADRs are the third leading cause of death!

The danger of passive smoking or illegal drugs is frequently aired in heath campaigns and outraged newspaper editorials, but ADRs ? which exact a far greater toll of misery ? very rarely trigger the same level of indignation.

If you were to ask most doctors about ADRs, they would give you one of the answers I used to give? Read more?

Obama remembers McGovern as 'champion for peace'

"George McGovern dedicated his life to serving the country he loved. He signed up to fight in World War II, and became a decorated bomber pilot over the battlefields of Europe. When the people of South Dakota sent him to Washington, this hero of war became a champion for peace. And after his career in Congress, he became a leading voice in the fight against hunger." ? President Barack Obama in an emailed statement

___

"We first met George while campaigning for him in 1972. Our friendship endured for 40 years. As a war hero, distinguished professor, Congressman, Senator and Ambassador, George always worked to advance the common good and help others realize their potential. Of all his passions, he was most committed to feeding the hungry, at home and around the world. The programs he created helped feed millions of people, including food stamps in the 1960s and the international school feeding program in the 90's, both of which he co-sponsored with Senator Bob Dole." ? Former President Bill Clinton and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in an emailed statement

___

"Ann and I extend our condolences to the family of George McGovern, the unwavering standard bearer of his party and a hero of World War II." ? Former Massachusetts Gov. and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney via Twitter

___

"George McGovern was a self-made man who served our nation, in war and in peace, with courage and conviction. He worked hard on behalf of South Dakota, and made history as the only South Dakotan to be nominated for President. Linda and I extend our sympathies to the McGovern family." ? South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard, a Republican, in an emailed statement

___

"George McGovern - always a gentleman and an outstanding member of the Greatest Generation. RIP." ? U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., via Twitter

___

"George McGovern was a voice of clarity and conviction at a time when America needed it most. He spoke to many of us who opposed the war but loved our country, because he was the genuine article, a soft-spoken, decent and gentle man who lived a remarkable life with humility, a decorated bomber pilot who never bragged about his own heroism, even as he ran into the buzzsaw of the negative and destructive politics that marked the Watergate era." ? U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., in an emailed statement

___

"George McGovern was clearly one of South Dakota's most outstanding public servants. The USA and the world would have been better off if he had defeated Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential election." ? Al Neuharth, a South Dakota native and founder of USA TODAY, The Freedom Forum and Newseum, in an emailed statement

___

"G McGovern - a great man . War hero, teacher, congressman, senator, presidential candidate, and life long advocate for peace God bless." ? Tom Brokaw, special correspondent for NBC News, via Twitter

___

"George McGovern lived a life of exemplary service. George's legacy of service will live on at the leadership program created in his name by his beloved Dakota Wesleyan University and in the hearts of all of those who took courage and inspiration from his public life and quiet, but powerful voice in the counsels of government." ? U.S. Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., in an emailed statement

"As the Democratic nominee for president, Senator McGovern put principle over politics and stood up for what he believed in. He lived his values, dedicating his life to fighting the scourge of poverty here at home and around the world. The forces of social justice lost a great fighter today, and Senator McGovern will be sorely missed." ? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., in an emailed statement

(AP) ? Police searched for a gunman who wore a painter's mask when he set fire to a home before going on a shooting spree early Saturday, killing a father and his 4-year-old son and injuring a woman and two other young children near Los Angeles.

A SWAT team set up a perimeter and was using dogs to search for the attacker, who may have lived in a rear house on the property, Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said.

Five neighboring houses in Inglewood were evacuated as officers searched residences and the trunks of cars. Other nearby residents were told to remain inside with their doors locked. The suspect was described as armed and dangerous.

Investigators were trying to determine whether he fled or remained in the house as it burned.

The man wore a painter's mask apparently to shield his identity, Fronterotta said.

The gunman had known the family for at least eight years, according to Capt. Tom Richards of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Television footage showed a home gutted by flames and a plume of smoke rising over the residential neighborhood early Saturday.

Detectives determined the suspect set the house ablaze at about 4 a.m. before opening fire with a weapon, Fronterotta said. Earlier the chief said the blaze was started after the gun attack.

The 28-year-old woman, said to be the children's mother, was being treated for gunshot wounds. She was in critical condition, as was a 6-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the pelvis and a 7-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a department statement.

After being shot, the mother carried the wounded 4-year-old to a neighbor's yard.

"This extraordinary rescue attempt by the mother occurred in spite of the fact that she had gunshot wounds to both legs," the statement said.

The 30-year-old father was shielding two of his children when he was shot, the chief said. He died in surgery, as did the 4-year-old boy.

An 8-year-old boy was uninjured.

Police have no motive. But a neighbor, Judy Castellanos, told the Los Angeles Times that the suspect lived in one of three units on the property and described him as "really weird" and "dangerous." She said he had not paid his rent for years and that a new property owner had been trying to evict him.

"He had been asked to leave by the end of this month," Castellanos told the newspaper, adding that he was reclusive and would not let anyone look inside his home. Castellanos, who said her daughter is related to the man who was killed, did not give the suspect's name.

3-D-printed airplane takes to the skies

3 hrs.

3-D printers are already being used to create machine parts and small toys, but engineers have now used the technology?to build an entire vehicle: a plastic, unmanned airplane that actually flies.

The plane, created by engineering students at the University of Virginia (U.Va.), has a 6.5-foot wingspan, and was made from assembled printed parts.

The team tested their creation during four flights in August and early September at Milton Airfield near Keswick, Va. The aircraft, which is only the third 3-D-printed plane known to have been built and flown, achieved a cruising speed of 45 mph.

3-D printing?is already proving to be a valuable tool in teaching?students, said David Sheffler, an engineer at U.Va. who worked with students Steven Easter and Jonathan Turman to create the?aircraft.

[How 3D Printing Could Become Commonplace]

?To make a plastic turbofan engine to scale five years ago would have taken two years, at a cost of about $250,000,? Sheffler said in a statement. ?But with 3-D printing we designed and built it in four months for about $2,000. This opens up an arena of teaching that was not available before. It allows us to train engineers for the real challenges they will face in industry.?

Consultative Selling And Corporate Sales Training

I get lots of great questions from you guys and I have a few here that are very common. I want all of you to learn from these recommendations and put yourself in these situations.
Would you do the same thing?

Q

I have heard you say that you shouldn?t give out pricing unless you gather infrmation first. Though I agree with you, sometimes you can?t do that. I am an account executive for a software company. We have several applications and packages that we sell and they are somewhat customized but we do have packages that are inexpensive, off-the-shelf packages as well. My question is how can I ask questions and find out more information if the person on the phone making the inquiry asks about our basic package and how much that one is? I mean it is a very straight forward question.

That you use to collect information and recommend the right package, that as soon as a prospect (or suspect in this case) asks for what they think the

A

OK let me calm down a minute before I answer this because I might blow. First of all, I didn?t realize that if you have a particular procedure you use to collect information and recommend the correct package for the prospect (or suspect in this case) that what they think they want is automatically correct and you are obliged to answer. I looked up your companies website before I answered and I don?t see anywhere an indication of you being non-profit organizations. What we fail to remember if you give an answer out that quickly you have absolutely no idea why they are looking at it, what else they are looking at, what issues they need to solve etc. If you don?t find out these simple answers isn?t there a chance you could be recommending (or in this case giving information on) the wrong application for their needs? If so isn?t it your responsibility to make sure you get to the issues they are having and recommend what is right and not just what they ask for simply because they asked for it???

Take control of you sales process, or it will take control of you and turn you into an order- taker and not a sales professional.

Q

Our company supplies promotional products to companies for give-aways to clients, prospective clients and to use at trade shows. My question is a simple one. I had a meeting with a large accounting and tax firm and they want to get samples of what I think they should use. I gave them the ones I thought were best for them and I have called and called to follow up with no answer on what they want, how many etc. How do I get them to call me back?

A

Well there is no trick but let?s understand a few things.
First of all I wouldn?t give anyone anything without clearly understanding if they like the ideas, what will happen next and by when. I would ask them, ?So if I give you the few things I think will help you with your upcoming trade show, based on what you told me you were trying to accomplish, with in the budget that we discussed, and you love them, what happens next?? If you don?t have a clear understanding here, don?t proceed.

Second of all what you are doing is not ?following up? it?s stalking! Follow up is when you mutually agree on what is going to happen next and each of you have set up a clear understanding of what that means. For example you will agree to talk on Tuesday at 3pm to get their decision of whether they are going with you or not and if so what are they ordering.

In both questions I am feeling (which is very common) the need to do whatever the prospect asks. You will only have that need if you don?t have a process that you follow to build business in your organization. Stop letting everyone else be in charge of your business and get control of a process that you use to sell. The last I checked most of you are not into business for fun. Most of us are trying to build business and make money. Believe me it won?t happen by letting the prospect decide how you run your process.

I wouldn?t get surgery done by a doctor who said , ?well this is how I do it but how would you like to proceed?? or a pilot so asked the passengers what speed to go once in the sky. Why is it ok in sales. It?s not.

HAVANA (AP) ? There are no flashy television ads or campaign signs spiked into front yards. And candidates definitely don't tour the island shaking hands and kissing babies.

Elections in Cuba lack the hoopla they have in other countries, but authorities here say they give people a voice in government and rebut charges that the country is undemocratic. Critics call them a sham since voters can't throw out the Communist Party long led by Fidel and Raul Castro.

A long, complicated and truly unique electoral process is under way on this communist-run island, with more than 8 million Cubans going to the polls this weekend for municipal elections. The process culminates in February, when national assembly legislators vote on who will occupy the presidency, a post held by Raul Castro since 2008.

The latest electoral exercise began in September when Cubans met in common spaces, parks and buildings for neighborhood assemblies to choose the candidates in municipal elections. Those assemblies nominated 32,000 candidates, and each electoral district must have between two and eight names on the ballot.

Sheets of paper with terse biographies and photos of the candidates were then taped up to strategically placed walls and windows in each neighborhood for residents to read. That's just about the only campaigning that's allowed.

On Sunday, Cubans will cast ballots to choose among these candidates for municipal assemblies that administer local governments and relay complaints on issues such as potholes and housing, social and sports programs.

After the local elections, commissions elected by workers, farmers, youth, student and women's groups then choose candidates for the national legislature, which eventually elects Cuba's next president.

Near-complete voter participation is expected. In 2007-2008, voter turnout was 96.8 percent.

The government says perennial high turnouts are a clear sign of support for the revolution. Dissidents say people vote for fear that not doing so could get them in trouble.

Polling places also turn into social gatherings for neighbors. Young students escort the elderly and the disabled to vote, and Cubans are reminded by state television, unions and women's groups that casting a ballot is a patriotic duty.

The entire process is devoid of party slogans, ads or logos, since only one party is legal in Cuba: the Communist Party, and its job is to "guide" society and its politics rather than impose candidates, said Ruben Perez, secretary of the National Electoral Commission.

"Voting is free, not obligatory and secret," he said. "Our system is totally transparent and we defend it like this. We think that it is very democratic.

"It is a different concept: no delegate represents any political interest, only society itself."

While the Communist Party's power and influence are enormous, candidates don't have to be party members.

But those who don't usually come from allied groups such as the Federation of Cuban Women and the neighborhood-watch Committees for the Defense of the Revolution.

The nomination assemblies also see heated debate and criticisms about local problems such as slow police response, poor water supply and garbage pickup or unauthorized vending stands that block sidewalks.

But it is rare, almost unheard of, for a candidate to be nominated against the party's wishes, and there's no real electoral threat to the country's rulers. There are no direct elections for the presidency or for Communist Party leadership posts, which critics say hold real power in the country.

Members of the island's tiny dissident community have not been nominated when they tried in the past, and many boycott a system they consider illegitimate.

"To be truly democratic, besides being free (the elections) should be competitive and the people able to choose among alternative programs and in the case here there is only one program, that of the government," said Elizardo Sanchez, a dissident who runs the non-governmental Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation.

Sanchez said that while multiparty systems have deficiencies, the island's one-party electoral process "doesn't reflect the pluralism of Cuban society."

Cuban authorities say they have no plans to change the system.

"Our adversaries and even some of our sympathizers ... demand of us, as if we were a country living under normal conditions and not under siege, that we reinstall a multiparty model," Raul Castro said at a Communist Party conference in January. But legalizing parties other than the Communist Party would be to "sacrifice the strategic arm of the unity of all Cubans that has made our dreams of independence and social justice a reality."

Eduardo Bueno, a political scientist at Mexico's Iberoamerican University, said that "in theoretical and ideological terms Cuban democracy would be very representative, but in practical historical terms it has not been that way."

Buenos said that Cuba's system has generated a democracy "deficit" on the island.

"It seems more a defensive strategy to oppose the 'internal enemy' allied with the United States than as an expression of mass participatory democracy."

Google's big miss highlights Wall Street's big worry

Google isn't the only company reporting disappointing revenues. So far this earnings season, most companies have exceeded profits expectations, but only 42 percent have beaten revenue forecasts.

Google's stunning earnings disappointment on Thursday is a dramatic example of what has become Wall Street's latest worry: revenue is coming in much worse than anyone thought.

Overall this earnings season, third-quarter profits have managed to be a shade better than the doom-and-gloom forecasts.

But company top lines?or the revenue generated that should be driving those bottom-line profit beats?have been even worse this quarter than they were last.

Google, which released results earlier than expected due to a printer error, showed that the Internet-search giant missed on both sales and profits. (Read more:Google Reports Big Earnings Miss)

?Google's misfortunes raised questions of whether it could be a market game-changer.

?With about one-third of the companies on the?Standard & Poor's 500?reporting so far, a healthy 65 percent have beaten the low bar set for profit expectations in the third quarter.

?But while that has been happening, just 42 percent have topped revenue forecasts.

?That is well below the historical average of 62 percent and even worse than the anemic second quarter, which saw a sales beat of just 44 percent. The market has flatlined so far during earnings.

Investors have shown a tendency as the economy works its way back from the financial crisis and ensuing recession that ended in 2009 to reward companies growing revenue and penalize those who fall short even if they beat on profit.

"We think focus will be on the top-line, which was rewarded most for positive surprises last quarter," said Savita Subramanian, equity and quant strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. "With cost structures already lean, sales growth is increasingly important for companies? ability to grow earnings." (Read More:?Earnings Look Better So Far, but Market May Not Care)

Keeping with that line of thinking, the pros at Strategas are advising investors that, based on current trends, the best bet will be to go defensive.

The firm said that when earnings pull back to these levels,?economic growth?usually takes more than three quarters to rebound.

They recommend a portfolio mix of long technology staples, consumer staples and health care, and short consumer discretionary.

"With the market down? from its September high, defensive shares have retaken leadership relative to cyclicals over the past month," Strategas' Nicholas Bohnsack and Emily Jones said in a note. "We remain in favor of a more defensive allocation for the intermediate term."
