(AP) ? A Senate Democrat says he believes "odds are better than people think" that a deal can be reached to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts next week.

New York's Chuck Schumer tells NBC's "Today" show he's encouraged that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is getting "actively engaged" in talks to resolve the problem.

Appearing on the same show Friday, Republican Sen. John Thune noted a meeting later Friday among President Barack Obama and congressional leaders, saying, "It's encouraging that people are talking."

The South Dakota senator said, "I think in the end we will get a deal, but the question is the timing of that."

He also said the two sides are at stalemate because, quote, "Democrats haven't been willing to discuss the issue of spending."

Champagne loses fizz in Europe after tough year

(AP) ? Europeans are finding fewer reasons to pop open a bottle of Champagne as another year of economic troubles and high unemployment saps the region's appetite for the finer things. But while the latest industry figures show that sales might be on the wane in Europe, other markets, particularly Japan and the United States, are developing a taste for a glass of bubbly.

In what is certain to be bad news for the vineyards, France ? Champagne's largest market ? is drinking fewer bottles. Sales of Champagne for the country were down 4.9 percent, and 5 percent elsewhere in the 27-country European Union, in the first nine months of 2012 compared with the same period in 2011, according to CIVC, the national association of growers and producers of the wine.

Nineteen months of rising unemployment and growing fears that the worst is yet to come have taken their toll on France ? nearly seven in 10 French are worried about their country's future, according to a recent poll.

"The French are pessimist by nature," said Antoine Chiquet, whose family has been producing Champagne for three generations and wine for eight. "We had a difficult election, we're in an economy where Europe's foundations are being questioned."

Nonetheless, the country managed to drink 175.7 million bottles of Champagne from Nov. 1 2011 to Oct. 31 2012, according to CIVC ? enough for nearly 3 bottles a year for every man, woman and child but about 10 million bottles fewer than the previous year. In contrast, the U.S. consumed enough sparkling wine for about 1.5 bottles per person in 2010, the latest figures available from the California-based Wine Institute.

But while the news out of France and Europe is bad, CIVC figures show export sales were up 3 percent in the first three quarters of the year. Top markets included the U.S., Japan and, to a lesser extent, China. A total of 19.4 million bottles of Champagne went to the United States and 7.9 million went to Japan ? the only two countries outside Europe in the top seven export markets.

Takayasu Ogata, a Tokyo-based sommelier, said Champagne and sparkling wine consumption is climbing in Japan at a time when overall wine demand peaked about 2000. According to the French figures, Champagne consumption alone was up nearly 7 percent over a year there.

"Both individuals and restaurants are taking to Champagnes with personality, including those that are from small makers but taste good," he said.

Lower price is another reason. Gone are the days when a bottle of Moet & Chandon went for 5,000 yen ($60) or more in Japan. These days, you can get real Champagne for as little as 2,000 yen ($25).

Of course, for those with rich tastes and a budget to match there are still lots of expensive Champagnes, selling for 10 times that, according to Ogata, who works at Venture Republic, an Internet retailer, and is in charge of wines.

Beer remains the drink of choice for many "salarymen," but younger people and women are taking a liking to Champagne, Ogata says.

"It's about the bubble ? a sense of gorgeousness," he said in a telephone interview. "There's that thrill to opening up a bottle of Champagne."

China is also emerging as a potentially strong market for a glass of fizz, although the numbers remain small. In 2011, the latest figures available, it ranked 19th in export markets for Champagne, apparently because consumers are less discriminating about precise origins. According to an EU ruling, only sparkling wine made in a particular region in northeast France is allowed to carry the name Champagne. The United States makes some exceptions, as long as the labeling is clear.

"People enjoy the 'boom' moment of opening sparkling wine. It is fun. It offers a more festive atmosphere and it tastes good," said said Yu Ming, a 29-year-old who operated a bar in Beijing's Sanlitun nightlife district until 2010. In China, he added, "people call all sparkling wine Champagne. They don't care where it is from or whether the fermentation is inside the bottle."

The sales manager at the BHG supermarket in a luxury shopping mall in Beijing confirmed that Champagne budgets are largely out of reach in China, saying most customers at the chic store will instead choose sparkling wine: "The most expensive Champagne is 7,800 yuan ($1,250) a bottle at my store, but the most expensive sparkling wine is only 268 yuan ($43)," said the manager, who gave his surname, Hou.

Chiquet, whose label Gaston Chiquet produces about 200,000 bottles a year, said France and Europe generally will remain the most important markets for Champagne. But for the numbers to climb again "we'll have to rediscover optimism."

"Champagne remains a drink for celebrating the big events of life," said Chiquet. "Happily for sales, at the end of the year, the French rely on tradition. Still, we're not going to catch up. Unfortunately, what's lost already is lost."

Toshiba Satellite P845-S4200

In an age of increasingly svelte laptops, the Toshiba Satellite P845-S4200 ($671.50 direct) stands out for what it is and what it isn't: simply put, it's a laptop, and not one that concerns itself with donning the coveted "ultrabook" title. For users who value affordability but don't want a bare-bones system stripped entirely of features, it's a solid Windows 7-equipped budget laptop whose shortcomings?a so-so keyboard and buckets of bloatware, mainly?are tempered by its low price tag.

Design and Features
Although it's not an ultrabook, at 13.7 inches wide and 9.2 inches deep and a thickness ranging from 0.95 ? 1.14 inches, the Satellite P845-S4200 is nonetheless a fairly compact system. With a weight of 4.26 pounds, it's lighter than the Editors' Choice Acer Aspire V5-571-6869 (5.07 pounds) and only slightly heavier than the similarly-priced ultraportable Dell Inspiron 13z (3.81 pounds). At any rate, users won't have any reason to fear a hernia when slipping the P845-S4200 into their backpacks or laptop bags.

The P845-S4200's sturdy aluminum chassis looks more expensive than actually is. Far from being the drab plastic chassis that one would expect in this price range, the Satellite P845-S4200 is decked out in a handsome silver finish that's elegantly complemented by an etched aluminum texture adorning the surface.

With a maximum resolution of 1,366 by 768, the P845-S4200's glossy 14-inch screen does a fine job displaying text and images alike, giving the user plenty of eye candy in the form of bright colors and crisp detail. With a resolution capable of supporting 720P content, users can pop their DVDs into the P845-S4200's internal DVD?RW drive and enjoy their movies in high definition. Two Harmon Kardon speakers are housed in symmetrical grilles beneath the display; I tested them out with the Knife's "Silent Shout," and they pumped out sound loud enough to fill a small room without sounding tinny. Although the bass level hardly qualifies as room-shaking, it's nevertheless decent for a laptop.

The P845-S4200's raised tile keyboard sports black keys and, despite its lack of a backlight, is relatively easy on the eyes. Alas, its shallow keystrokes are not as nearly as easy on the hands, and ultimately it makes for a fairly frustrating typing experience. The touch pad, on the other hand, is smooth and responsive, so while typing on the P845-S4200 may induce its share of grimacing, two-finger scrolling and pinch-zooming can be performed fluidly.

Port selection on the P845-S4200 is decent. An SD card reader can be found at the front of the system while, in addition to the system's DVD?RW drive, the right side houses two USB 3.0 ports alongside an Ethernet port. The left side, meanwhile, features headphone and mic jacks, a third USB 3.0 port, a VGA port, and a full-size HDMI output. The latter is a nice touch, as it eliminates the need to mess around with dongles and adapters when connecting the laptop to a larger display. Even better, the P845-S4200 features Intel's Wireless Display, letting users who outfit their televisions with an aftermarket adapter along the lines of the Netgear Push2TV, ditch their HDMI cable altogether, and beam their content wirelessly.

The P845-S4200's 750GB 5,400rpm hard drive comes with a healthy serving of preloaded software. As is often the case, these programs vary in utility from useful (Microsoft Office Starter 2010) to pure bloatware (Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer, Microsoft Live Essentials) with some trialware (thirty days of Norton Internet Security) sprinkled in between. There's also an unusually large amount of proprietary software too numerous to list that includes Toshiba App Place, Toshiba Bulletin Board, Toshiba Disc Creator, Toshiba Video Player, and so on. If you like prefer to start using your system with a clean, unsullied slate, be warned: the sheer avalanche of proprietary software means that it will take a good amount of time to remove all of this software from your system. It comes bundled with Windows 7 Home Premium, so users looking for the newer Windows 8 operating system will need to spring extra for an upgrade. Toshiba covers the P845-S4200 is covered by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Performance
Toshiba Satellite P845-S4200 Armed with a 1.7GHz Intel Core i5-3317U processor and 6GB RAM, the P845-S4200 performed relatively well when stacked against its peers. While it was unable to complete our PCMark 7 benchmark test, its performance on our 3DMark 06 tests (5,848 points in standard resolution, 3,220 in native resolution) gave us some idea of its processing ability. Accordingly, the Satellite P845-S4200 outperformed the rest of its class, edging past both the Acer V5-571-6869 (5,772 points and 3,168 points, respectively) and the Dell Inspiron 13z (5,721 points and 3,164 points, respectively) and only falling short of the Dell Inspiron 15r-5520 (6,308 points and 5,229 points, respectively), which doesn't come as a surprise given the latter's faster 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-3210 CPU.

The P845-S4200 displayed similar finesse in multimedia-related tasks. It completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in 1 minute 57 seconds, finishing quicker than the Inspiron 13z (1:59) and, by a much larger extent, the AMD A6-4455M-equipped HP Envy 6z-1000 Sleekbook (4:05) while once again coming short of the Dell 15r-5520 (1:41). Similar results were seen with the Satellite P845-S4200's Cinebench R11.5 score of 2.41 points, which fell short of the Inspiron 15r-5520 (2.85 points) while surpassing the rest, like the Acer V5-571-6869 (2.37 points) and the Dell Inspiron 13z (2.39 points). However, the P845-S4200 faltered slightly on our Photoshop CS5 test (4 minutes 37 seconds), finishing a few seconds behind both the Inspiron 13z (4:35) and the (Acer V5-571-6869 (4:34) but coming nowhere near the Dell 15r-5520 (3:53). All said, the P845-S4200 has the chops to deftly handle media consumption with moderate media creation to boot. Toshiba Satellite P845-S4200 Like the rest of its class, save for the AMD Radeon 7500G-equipped HP Envy 6z-1000, the P845-S4200 sports an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU, so cracking the 30 frames per second (fps) playability barrier in visually demanding games isn't to be expected. This was the case with its performance in our Crysis benchmark test (21fps in medium-quality settings at 1,024-by-768 resolution), which was roughly on par with the Dell Inspiron 13z (20fps) and the Dell 15r-5520 (24fps). The same applies with the P845-S4200's performance in our Lost Planet 2 benchmark test (21fps in medium-quality settings at 1,024-by-768 resolution, 7fps in high-quality settings at native resolution), as it closely aligned with what we saw in the case of the Acer V5-571-6869 (21fps and 10fps, respectively) and the HP Envy 6z-1000 (21fps and 12fps, respectively).

The P845-S4200's removable 48Whr battery lasted an impressive 7 hours 24 minutes on our MobileMark 2007 battery rundown test, putting it ahead of its class. By contrast, the Acer V5-571-6869 (4:51) and the HP Envy 6z-1000 (5:35) failed to reach the six-hour mark. It's safe to say that the P845-S4200 will get you through most, if not all, of your day regardless of whether a power outlet happens to be nearby.

All said, the Toshiba Satellite P845-S4200 is a solid choice for users looking to save a buck without having to settle for a bare-bones system. That said, the Acer Aspire V5-571-6869 offers similar performance for a significantly lower price, and for that reason it continues to reign as our Editors' Choice for budget laptops. Still, the Satellite P854-S4200 remains a good choice, and its handsomely designed chassis, solid battery life, and low price all go a long way toward disproving the notion that systems in this price range must necessarily compromise performance or design.

Peace envoy Brahimi, Syria diplomats in Moscow talks

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia will host Syria peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi this week after Syrian officials held talks in Moscow on Thursday as part of a diplomatic drive to try to agree a plan to end the 21-month-old conflict, Russia's foreign ministry said.

Talks have moved to Moscow, a long-time Syria ally, after a flurry of meetings Brahimi held in Damascus this week, but the international envoy has disclosed little about his negotiations.

Brahimi, who saw Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday and is planning to hold a series of meetings with Syrian officials and dissidents this week, is trying to broker a peaceful transfer of power.

More than 44,000 Syrians have been killed in a revolt against four decades of Assad family rule, a conflict that began with peaceful protests in March last year, but which has descended into civil war.

Past peace efforts have floundered, with world powers divided over what has become an increasingly sectarian struggle between mostly Sunni Muslim rebels and Assad's security forces, drawn primarily from his Shi'ite-rooted Alawite minority.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Makdad and an aide held talks for less than two hours on Thursday with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Mikhail Bogdanov, the Kremlin's envoy for Middle East affairs, but declined to disclose details of their visit.

Syrian and Lebanese sources said Makdad had been sent to Moscow to discuss the details of a peace plan proposed by Brahimi.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich played down the idea that a specific new proposal was on the table in Moscow talks, at least one agreed by Moscow and Washington.

Asked about rumors of a Russian-American plan to resolve the conflict, he said: "There has not been and is no such plan."

'TRYING TO FEEL A WAY OUT'

"In our talks with Mr. Brahimi and with our American colleagues, we are trying to feel a way out of this situation on the basis of our common plan of action that was agreed in Geneva in June," Lukashevich told reporters at a weekly briefing.

Setting the scene for a planned Russian meeting with Brahimi on Saturday, he said, "We plan to discuss a range of issues linked to a political and diplomatic settlement in Syria, including Brahimi's efforts aimed at ending the violence and the launch of a comprehensive national dialogue."

World powers believe Russia, which has given Assad military and diplomatic aid to help him weather the uprising, has the ear of Syria's government and must be a key player in peace talks.

Moscow has tried to distance itself from Assad in recent months and has said it is not propping him up, but Lukashevich reiterated its stance that Assad's exit from power could not be a precondition for negotiations.

Setting such a condition, he said, would violate the terms of an agreement reached by world powers in Geneva on June 30 that called for a transitional government in Syria.

Lukashevich said Russia continued to believe there was "no alternative" to the Geneva Declaration and repeated accusations that the United States has reneged on it.

"Our American colleagues and some others ... have turned sharply from this position, by 180 degrees, supporting the opposition and conducting no dialogue with the government - putting the opposition in the mood for no dialogue with the authorities but for overthrowing the authorities," he said.

"The biggest disagreement ... is that one side thinks Assad should leave at the start of the process - that is the U.S. position, and the other thinks his departure should be a result of the process - that would be the Russian position," Dmitry Trenin, an analyst at the Moscow Carnegie Center, told Reuters.

But Trenin said battlefield gains made by the Syrian rebels were narrowing the gap between Moscow and Washington.

On Saturday, Lavrov said that neither side would win Syria's civil war and that Assad would not quit even if Russia or China told him to. Bogdanov had earlier acknowledged that Syrian rebels might win.

Lavrov has said this month that Russia had no intention of offering Assad asylum and would not act as messenger for other nations seeking his exit.

Question: Do they know who they are paired with? As in, are they specifically paired with someone in the roleplay, or is that just for the roleplayers to know how the story is to progress? And if the first one, are the characters aware of who they are paired with? Sorry if that didn't make any sense. :3

China tightening controls on Internet

BEIJING (AP) ? China's new communist leaders are increasing already tight controls on Internet use and electronic publishing following a spate of embarrassing online reports about official abuses.

The measures suggest China's new leader, Xi Jinping, and others who took power in November share their predecessors' anxiety about the Internet's potential to spread opposition to one-party rule and their insistence on controlling information despite promises of more economic reforms.

"They are still very paranoid about the potentially destabilizing effect of the Internet," said Willy Lam, a politics specialist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "They are on the point of losing a monopoly on information, but they still are very eager to control the dissemination of views."

This week, China's legislature took up a measure to require Internet users to register their real names, a move that would curtail the Web's status as a freewheeling forum to complain, often anonymously, about corruption and official abuses. The legislature scheduled a news conference Friday to discuss the measure, suggesting it was expected to be approved.

That comes amid reports Beijing might be disrupting use of software that allows Web surfers to see sites abroad that are blocked by its extensive Internet filters. At the same time, regulators have proposed rules that would bar foreign companies from distributing books, news, music and other material online in China.

Beijing promotes Internet use for business and education but bans material deemed subversive or obscene and blocks access to foreign websites run by human rights and Tibet activists and some news outlets. Controls were tightened after social media played a role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

In a reminder of the Web's role as a political forum, a group of 70 prominent Chinese scholars and lawyers circulated an online petition this week appealing for free speech, independent courts and for the ruling party to encourage private enterprise.

Xi and others on the party's ruling seven-member Standing Committee have tried to promote an image of themselves as men of the people who care about China's poor majority. They have promised to press ahead with market-oriented reforms and to support entrepreneurs but have given no sign of support for political reform.

Communist leaders who see the Internet as a source of economic growth and better-paid jobs were slow to enforce the same level of control they impose on movies, books and other media, apparently for fear of hurting fledgling entertainment, shopping and other online businesses.

Until recently, Web surfers could post comments online or on microblog services without leaving their names.

That gave ordinary Chinese a unique opportunity to express themselves to a public audience in a society where newspapers, television and other media are state-controlled. The most popular microblog services say they have more than 300 million users and some users have millions of followers reading their comments.

The Internet also has given the public an unusual opportunity to publicize accusations of official misconduct.

A local party official in China's southwest was fired in November after scenes from a videotape of him having sex with a young woman spread quickly on the Internet. Screenshots were uploaded by a former journalist in Beijing, Zhu Ruifeng, to his Hong Kong website, an online clearing house for corruption allegations.

Some industry analysts suggest allowing Web surfers in a controlled setting to vent helps communist leaders stay abreast of public sentiment in their fast-changing society. Still, microblog services and online bulletin boards are required to employ censors to enforce content restrictions. Researchers say they delete millions of postings a day.

The government says the latest Internet regulation before the National People's Congress is aimed at protecting Web surfers' personal information and cracking down on abuses such as junk e-mail. It would require users to report their real names to Internet service and telecom providers.

The main ruling party newspaper, People's Daily, has called in recent weeks for tighter Internet controls, saying rumors spread online have harmed the public. In one case, it said stories about a chemical plant explosion resulted in the deaths of four people in a car accident as they fled the area.

Proposed rules released this month by the General Administration of Press and Publications would bar Chinese-foreign joint ventures from publishing books, music, movies and other material online in China. Publishers would be required to locate their servers in China and have a Chinese citizen as their local legal representative.

That is in line with rules that already bar most foreign access to China's media market, but the decision to group the restrictions together and publicize them might indicate official attitudes are hardening.

That comes after the party was rattled by foreign news reports about official wealth and misconduct.

In June, Bloomberg News reported that Xi's extended family has amassed assets totaling $376 million, though it said none was traced to Xi. The government has blocked access to Bloomberg's website since then.

In October, The New York Times reported that Premier Wen Jiabao's relatives had amassed $2.7 billion since he rose to national office in 2002. Access to the Times' Chinese-language site has been blocked since then.

Previous efforts to tighten controls have struggled with technical challenges in a country with more than 500 million Internet users.

Microblog operators such as Sina Corp. and Tencent Ltd. were ordered in late 2011 to confirm users' names but have yet to finish the daunting task.

Web surfers can circumvent government filters by using virtual private networks ? software that encrypts Web traffic and is used by companies to transfer financial data and other sensitive information. But VPN users say disruptions that began in 2011 are increasing, suggesting Chinese regulators are trying to block encrypted traffic.

Curbs on access to foreign sites have prompted complaints by companies and Chinese scientists and other researchers.

In July, the American Chamber of Commerce in China said 74 percent of companies that responded to a survey said unstable Internet access "impedes their ability to do business."

Chinese leaders "realize there are detrimental impacts on business, especially foreign business, but they have counted the cost and think it is still worthwhile," said Lam. "There is no compromise about the political imperative of controlling the Internet."

Apple Exploring Alternative Wind Power Technology And Motion-Control Mac Mice

Image (1) wind_turbine.jpg for post 111007Apple's patent filings today reveal one concept outside their usual product-focused applications, detailing a method for?harnessing?wind power in a manner different from that employed in traditional turbines. Electricity gathered from a wind turbine would be converted to heat energy and stored in a "low-heat capacity fluid" in Apple's patent, allowing it to be tapped on an as-needed basis whenever the wind dies down.

pilates-feature

Pilates is? a favorite among Hollywood starlets and well-versed fitness fanatics.

Pilates is a kind of exercise that improves flexibility, coordination and also strengthens muscles through controlled movements done as mat exercises or with equipment to tone and strengthen the body. It has been the favorite type of exercise for r dancers, athletes and actors.

Pilates Overview

Pilates daily workouts? will help your body to address unique issues or problem areas, and gets you in tune with your body as it is good for the mind and good for the body.? By doing routine Pilates exercises you can build a strong core, develop flat abdominals and create a strong back by strengthening the muscles that support your spine.

Pilates also improves mental and physical health by increasing flexibility and blood circulation. It particularly works on the body?s core or your torso. Pilates would also help you to have better posture, and in case of injury, Pilates exercises will help you to experience better overall health.

pilates founderThe founder of Pilates, Joseph H. Pilates, had some serious health problem such as asthma as a kid, he built his body and grew stronger and became an athlete. As a nurse in Great Britain during World War I, he designed exercise methods and equipment for immobilized patients and soldiers. He also developed a series of mat exercises that focus on the torso and by combining various exercise methods such as the mind-body formats of yoga and Chinese martial arts he created a new routine exercise.
The main point of the Pilates philosophy is that our physical and mental health is intertwined. He designed his exercise program around principles that support this philosophy, including concentration, precision, control, breathing, and flowing movements.

Benefits of Pilates

There are lots of benefits of doing Pilates such as general fitness, better sleep, increasing strength, to lose weight, to increase coordination, to get toned body with lean muscles, to help to heal injuries such as back pain, joint pain, to develop mind-body and for better sexual health. Pilates teaches proper breathing and spinal and pelvic alignment, helping you become more connected with your body. Breathing properly can also help to reduce stress.

Pilates gets different results in each individual. But one thing is the same. You feel great and it?s effective. It will help you to have a lean look without bulky muscles. Your body will be strong without looking Bulky and maybe that is why Pilates is a popular exercise for gymnasts and professional dancers.

Most conventional workouts tend to create bulky muscle, but Pilates does not rely on frequent repetition, and thus no overgrown muscles. It just focuses on the whole body, not just on sections of muscles. Your focus would be on the core and around the area of the abdominal muscles and the back and you will be benefiting a lot by a proper use of the Pilates program such as the ability to increase the strength of stabilizer muscles that may not commonly be worked out in a standard exercise program.

Pilates also stresses the use of fluid movements and circulation that can be a great way to get a better sense of the kinesthetic of your body. A lot of people feel that they are better able to balance themselves regardless of the position that they are in.

Like yoga and Chinese martial arts, by engaging the mind and enhancing body awareness Pilates not only helps you to tone your body, but your mind and spirit as well and you will be more mindful of your body. Breath movement is also emphasized to put you in touch with how breath moves through your body.

The mind-body connection

pilates for womenPilates has been demonstrated to reduce stress, anxiety, and helps lift depression. The mind-body connection is fundamental to the study and practice of Pilates. As you see Pilates has numerous benefits that one can attain through regular use of the exercise program. It also strengthens your body and helps prevent future injuries. Since no set of muscles is ever over or under trained, there is less risk for injury.
It teaches you how to become efficient with your body. Very few exercises can help your body become more efficient in its movement. By practicing Pilates on a regular basis, you can train your body more to move in a much safer and more efficient manner.

Benefits of Pilates for Older Adults

Unfortunately when we get older our bodies get stiff and we feel pain in our joints. Even if you start Pilates at the older age you can still get some of the benefits to prevent the elderly pain from arthritis and other bone problems.

Even adults undergoing serious rehabilitation therapy can use Pilates to increase their range of motion and overall muscle strength. ?As a senior you need to consult with your doctor or a medical professional to make sure that Pilates will benefit you, but in most cases it has been very helpful for adult with back and joint pain.? Make sure that you never feel pain while practicing Pilates and stop as you start to feel any pain. Pilates was designed to progress naturally from one movement to another. If you feel stopped at one movement, don?t give up. Start at the beginning and work your way back to the areas you found most challenging.

Remember that practice makes perfect and that you cannot do it all in one day.

Take your time practicing Pilates and you will reap the rewards this great exercise regimen.

7 Barrington Groups Among CVS Caremark Charity Classic ...

Seventy-seven area nonprofit organizations -- including seven Barrington organizations -- got a welcome holiday boost last week as they received funds generated from the CVS Caremark Charity Classic in Barrington.

The tournament, Rhode Island?s largest charitable sporting event, raised $1.2 million this year for charities across Southern New England, bringing the total funds raised since its inception to more than $16 million.

The Barrington organizations receiving funds:

 • Barrington Arts Alive
 • Barrington Community School
 • Barrington Education Foundation
 • Barrington Land Conservation Trust
 • Barrington Public Library
 • Barrington Senior Center
 • Bayside YMCA

Present to award the funds raised by this year?s tournament ? which draws some of the world?s best PGA and LPGA golfers to Barrington each summer ? were CVS Caremark President and CEO Larry Merlo and PGA tour professionals/CVS Caremark Charity Classic co-hosts Billy Andrade of Bristol and Brad Faxon of Barrington.

The trio distributed the funds amid a holiday atmosphere, and inspirational stories were shared by a student and the Head of School for Our Sisters? School ? one of the nonprofit recipients of the funds ? located in New Bedford, Mass.

?The appeal of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic is two-fold,? said Merlo. ?First, the tournament provides world-class entertainment for avid golf fans. In addition, the tournament has a deep commitment of providing much-needed financial support to a range of organizations that make a real difference in the lives of so many. In such a challenging economic climate, we are especially proud to give back to the communities we serve through the CVS Caremark Charity Classic.?

Funds raised by this year?s CVS Caremark Charity Classic will support the missions of a multitude of charities, in turn, touching the lives of people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. From helping Crossroads Rhode Island, which provides basic emergency needs, shelter and housing for homeless families and individuals; to assisting Bradley Children?s Hospital in providing a range of family-focused, high quality mental health care to infants, children and young adults with emotional disorders and/or developmental disabilities; to supporting Our Sisters? School in New Bedford in offering a quality education to girls from challenging financial backgrounds ? the Charity Classic provides significant funding to target critical needs within the community.?

?As a result of the generous gift we received through the CVS Caremark Charity Classic, middle school girls from New Bedford will be able to access educational opportunities at Our Sisters' School that would otherwise not have been financially possible for their families,? said Lisa Yates, Head of School for Our Sisters? School. ?Our goal of challenging each student to reach her full potential by developing academic competence, social confidence, cultural proficiency, intellectual curiosity, integrity and hope is bolstered by donations provided by the tournament. Our students are active volunteers in their community, inspiring role models of educational attainment for others in their families and leaders at the secondary schools our alumnae attend. The CVS Caremark Charity Classic Auction supports this important work.?

Merlo added, ?When we hear stories about the challenges and success from our charity partners ? like the one shared today by Our Sisters? School ? it drives us even more to continue to raise funds through the CVS Caremark Charity Classic. We are extremely proud to host an event that has become so meaningful in our community.??

In addition to acknowledging the charities for their important work, Merlo accentuated the leadership provided by Andrade and Faxon through their roles as co-chairs during the history of the Charity Classic, presenting them with thank you plaques and special replications of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic logo. He also emphasized the dedication of the 20 working charities that provided nearly 1,000 volunteers to help bring the tournament to life.?

Hitachi CEO: Still in talks on Lithuania nuclear project

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Hitachi Ltd remains in talks with Lithuania over its plans to build a nuclear plant after the European country's new centre-left government said it could shelve nuclear projects, the company's top executive said on Tuesday.

Hitachi, a century-old conglomerate that designs and builds nuclear power plants with General Electric Co in two joint ventures, has shifted its focus overseas as Japan shuns nuclear energy in the wake of the worst radiation crisis in 25 years at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant last year.

Hitachi's nuclear joint venture had been lined up to supply a nuclear energy plant to Lithuania under the country's previous government, which lost power in October.

"There might be a slight lag in the time period, but the talks have not been completely suspended," Hiroaki Nakanishi, Chief Executive of Hitachi, said at a press briefing.

Nakanishi said he did not think the worldwide market for nuclear energy would shrink, but said it was impossible to form a sales outlook for Hitachi's nuclear business before Japan's own energy policy has been concluded.

The company has previously said it aimed to reach 360 billion yen ($4.25 billion) in sales in the nuclear business by fiscal year 2020. Hitachi's power systems division, which includes its thermal and nuclear power business, logged 832.4 billion yen in sales the year ended March.

The December election victory of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, headed by incoming prime minister Shinzo Abe, has fuelled speculation that the new government would take a friendlier stance toward nuclear power.

Nakanishi is credited with a sweeping cost-cutting initiative at Hitachi. The firm is consolidating its 900-plus subsidiaries as it tries to take on global rivals like GE and Siemens AG .

The company most recently merged its thermal power division with that of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd and executives from both firms have said they are open to working together on nuclear power.

Hitachi and Mitsubishi Heavy compete against Toshiba Corp in thermal power projects in Japan. The three companies are also rivals in nuclear power projects overseas. Most recently, Hitachi beat Toshiba and its subsidiary Westinghouse to a $1.1 billion deal in October to build six nuclear plants in Britain.

In a further sign of consolidation, company subsidiaries Hitachi Metals Ltd and Hitachi Cable Ltd have said they will merge their businesses next April. Nakanishi said on Tuesday Hitachi Transport System Ltd and Hitachi Capital Corp should remain listed separately.

Shares in Hitachi ended up 0.4 percent at 484 yen on Tuesday, against a 1.4 percent rise on Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei average <.n225>. ($1 = 84.7950 Japanese yen)

Private equity's European land grab - The Term Sheet: Fortune's ...

By Charles Wallace, contributor

The Carlyle Group bought the property at 88 St. James's St. for $54 million.

The Carlyle Group bought the property at 88 St. James's St. for $54 million.

FORUNE -- The Blackstone Group has raised a dedicated $4 billion European real estate fund; David Abrams, head of European real estate investment for Apollo Global Management, says his firm has made 30 investments this year in the U.K., Germany, Ireland, and Spain; the Carlyle Group is buying mainly in Northern Europe, which includes Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, and especially the U.K. -- isn't Europe supposed to be shaky ground in which to invest? What gives?

MORE: 20 best places in the world to launch a business

Well, there are deals to be had. European banks, bloated with real estate, have been looking to dump their holdings -- the International Monetary Fund estimates that 58 European banks will sell at least $2 trillion in assets over the next two years. (By contrast, the S&L mess in the U.S. in the 1980s forced the sale of only about $400 billion in assets.) Ken Caplan, head of European real estate for the Blackstone Group (BX), says that this is still the most desirable market for global investors, especially high-profile London office buildings. Spain is creating a "bad bank" to take over about $117 billion in nonperforming real estate loans that have been weighing down balance sheets all over Madrid. Spanish banks have been reluctant to sell the assets at a loss because it would erase their capital, but the bad bank will probably sell them at market clearing prices.

MORE: The Fortune Global 500

Still, even distressed assets ain't cheap. Abrams says that U.S. firms are getting bargains because they have to invest in big infrastructure on the ground, using dedicated teams in each country, including experts on credit and the real estate market, which can be dramatically different from country to country. Traditional investment banks are noticeably absent from this land grab. It seems they have less appetite to invest in distressed debt.

Microloans Add Impact On Small Business Lending

Generally, small business owners need commercial loans to buy a business with real estate, refinance a commercial real estate asset (like a gas station, strip mall, industrial warehouse, office building, motel, hotel, etc.) or refinance a business with real estate. However, the complexity of commercial loans makes deal structuring difficult. Here's our guide to commercial loans.:

New factor that could limit life of hybrid and electric car batteries revealed

Dec. 12, 2012 ? A new study of the batteries commonly used in hybrid and electric-only cars has revealed an unexpected factor that could limit the performance of batteries currently on the road.

Researchers led by Ohio State University engineers examined used car batteries and discovered that over time lithium accumulates beyond the battery electrodes -- in the "current collector," a sheet of copper which facilitates electron transfer between the electrodes and the car's electrical system.

This knowledge could aid in improving design and performance of batteries, explained Bharat Bhushan, Ohio Eminent Scholar and Howard D. Winbigler Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

"Our study shows that the copper current collector plays a role in the performance of the battery," he said.

The study, which appears in a recent issue of the journal Scripta Materialia, reflects an ongoing collaboration between Bhushan and Suresh Babu, professor of materials science and engineering and director of the National Science Foundation Center for Integrative Materials Joining for Energy Applications, headquartered at the university. The team is trying to determine the factors that limit battery life.

Lithium-ion batteries are the rechargeable batteries used in most hybrid-electric cars and all-electric cars as well. Inside, lithium ions shuttle back and forth between the anode and cathode of the battery -- to the anode when the battery is charging, and back to the cathode when the battery is discharging.

Previously, the researchers determined that, during aging of the battery, cyclable lithium permanently builds up on the surface of the anode, and the battery loses charge capacity.

This latest study revealed that lithium migrates through the anode to build up on the copper current collector as well.

"We didn't set out to find lithium in the current collector, so you could say we accidentally discovered it, and how it got there is a bit of a mystery. As far as we know, nobody has ever expected active lithium to migrate inside the current collector," Bhushan said.

Shrikant Nagpure, now postdoctoral researcher at Ohio State, carried out this research as a part of his doctoral degree. He examined batteries that were aged in collaboration with the university's Center for Automotive Research, where colleagues Yann Guezennec and Giorgio Rizzoni have studied battery aging for several years, in collaboration with the automotive industry.

Key to the discovery of lithium in the current collector was collaboration between the Ohio State team and Gregory Downing, a research chemist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and an expert on a technique called neutron depth profiling (NDP), a tool for impurity analysis in materials.

Previously, the researchers used NDP to study the cathodes and anodes of six off-the-shelf lithium-ion car batteries -- one new battery and five batteries which they aged themselves in the laboratory -- and found that lithium builds up on the anode surface over time.

To understand more about how these batteries degrade, Bhushan and his colleagues have been studying the batteries further, at various scales ranging from the millimeter (millionths of a meter) down to the nanometer (billionths of a meter) with different techniques.

In the NDP technique, researchers pass neutrons through a material and capture the charged particles that emerge from the fission reaction between neutrons and lithium in the electrodes. Since different chemical elements emit a certain signature set of particles with specific energies, NDP can reveal the presence of impurities in a material.

In this latest study, NDP detected the presence of lithium in the copper current collector from one of the aged batteries. The detection was measured as a ratio of the number of copper atoms in the collector to the number of lithium atoms that had collected there. The test yielded a ratio of up to 0.08 percent, or approximately one lithium atom per 1250 copper atoms in the collector.

That's a small number, but high enough that it could conceivably affect the electrical performance of the current collector -- and, in turn, the performance of a battery, Bhushan said. He hopes that battery makers will further investigate this phenomenon and use the information to design new materials that might prevent lithium from escaping the electrode material.

Next, he and his colleagues will study the impedance, or internal electrical resistance, of lithium-ion batteries on the nanoscale.

Funding for this study came from the Institute for Materials Research at Ohio State.
