Hot Stone Massage | Magna Health and Fitness

By our guest blogger, and massage therapist Stephanie Shirek

Hot Stone Therapy dates back to 1500 BC when Native Americans and Europeans used heated stones for medicinal needs. Verbal and written history explain the Chinese used heated stones for improving function of internal organs. Today, in modern society, we give Mary Nelson credit for the rebirth of hot stone massage in 1993 with Lastone Therapy.

What to expect with a hot stone massage? An intense feeling of relaxation!

Basalt stones are heated in a temperature-controlled water bath and placed purposefully on the client?s body. While some stones are in place, the therapist will choose to massage another area with more hot stones. The heat from the stones relax the superficial tissues deepening the relaxation of the soft tissues.

Benefits

- A form of thermotherapy and massage therapy combined. Thermotherapy is when we apply heat to relieve pain.
- Promotes deep muscle and tissue relaxation, which can be painful to achieve through a non-hot stone massage, depending on the density of your tissue.
- Improves circulation by increasing the size of blood vessels, alleviates stress and calms the nervous system through the warmth and touch. Some believe the earth energy (geomagnetism) from the stones helps them feel grounded and is a source for balancing and healing.

Hot Stone Massage is not for everyone. Please note the contraindications before setting up an appointment. For more information call (651) 815-7488, or email apalm@magnahealthandfitness.com.
